Solana's decentralized exchanges (DEXs) witnessed a surge in trading volume, reaching a new monthly all-time high of over $58.4 billion in March, as reported by DeFiLlama. This figure surpasses the previous record of nearly $28.5 billion set in December 2023. The heightened trading activity coincides with an ongoing frenzy surrounding meme coins on Solana. Notably, popular meme coins such as Dogwifhat (WIF) and Bonk (BONK) experienced substantial trading volumes during the past month. Additionally, the introduction of new meme coins like Book of Meme (BOME) and Slerf (SLERF) has fueled significant market activity.
Political Meme Coins
Meme coins linked to political figures such as Donald Trump and Joe Biden gained traction in March. Following the sentencing of FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried on Thursday, several meme coins emerged to capitalize on the news, experiencing a surge of over 30,000% in value before experiencing a sharp decline. One such example is the Solana meme coin "Som Bonkmon Fraud," which saw a staggering spike of 15,000% in value and reached a trading volume of $24 million—only to plummet by 90% the following day.

Orca Dominance
Recently, the Solana DEX Orca has emerged as a dominant force in the space, spearheading the rally with a notable trading volume of $3.6 billion over the past seven days. Following closely behind are Raydium and Phoenix, with trading volumes of $1.73 billion and $1.6 billion, respectively.
The Surge of Jupiter
Amidst the surge in activity on Solana DEXs, one of the primary beneficiaries is Jupiter, a decentralized exchange aggregator. Its native token, JUP, is currently priced at $1.66, marking a 24.9% increase for the week, according to CoinGecko.
In a notable development last month, Meow, co-founder of Jupiter, announced that the DEX would allocate fees to Slerf pre-sale buyers. This decision came after the developer inadvertently burned $10 million worth of funds raised in presales for the meme coin.
New Solana Meme Coins
New Solana meme coins have kicked off April on a strong note, with Book of Meme (BOME) witnessing a 16% increase in the last 24 hours, reaching $0.0166, and Popcat (POPCAT) experiencing a 45% surge to a price surpassing $0.33.
In contrast, the favoured Solana meme coin, Dogwifhat, concluded March with a notable 43.9% increase at $4.04, while Bonk (BONK) ended the month with a modest 1.3% gain. However, both Dogwifhat and Bonk saw a decline at the beginning of April, down by 14.3% and 8.9%, respectively.
Despite the surge in trading volume and the ongoing frenzy surrounding meme coins on the Solana network, SOL itself has started April with a 4% decline over the last 24 hours, currently priced just below $189. Although Solana achieved a market capitalization exceeding $90 billion in March, it has since decreased to about $84 billion as of the latest update.
