Polygon has just launched its new DApp or decentralized application called the Polygon Portal, which is now currently in public beta mode.
While it is still in beta, it is already helpful as it has a number of features for Polygon users to transact on the blockchain as well as on other blockchains such as Ethereum.
In this article, we will be talking about one of its features, which is the Polygon Bridge, a blockchain bridge that can be used to move cryptocurrencies around from Polygon to Ethereum and vice versa.
How to use the Polygon Bridge
The first step in using the Polygon Bridge is to set up an EVM compatible wallet such as Metamask, so you are able to use the Polygon Blockchain as well as the Ethereum Blockchain all in one wallet.
Make sure that the token you want to move around with is in that wallet so that when you open the Polygon Portal, you are ready to transact.
After you are done, make sure that the wallet can be connected to the Polygon Portal platform so that you can use the bridge.
Now that you have your wallet and funds set up, let’s start the process!
Go to The Bridge
The first step is to go to the bridge in the Polygon Portal site as there are lots of features on it, so make sure you don’t get it mixed up.
The bridge can be selected on the left side of the Polygon Portal, so you can also see other features on it.
There are several features such as a place to manage your asset on your connected wallet, a swap feature if you want to buy or sell your crypto, and an information page to see the existing ecosystem on Polygon as well as information regarding transactions happening on the blockchain itself.
Chose The Blockchains
After you have successfully located the bridge, you can start by choosing which chains you want to send from and to by clicking the button that says the default chains which are Ethereum and Polygon zkEVM, just like the image above.
There are three chains to choose from, which are Ethereum, Polygon POS, and Polygon zkEVM. The differences lie between the functions.
The Ethereum Blockchain can be selected when you want to send cryptocurrencies from or to the Ethereum Blockchain.
Confusion usually occurs when differentiating between the Polygon zkEVM Blockchain and the Polygon POS Blockchain.
The zkEVM Blockchain is the one that is used as a layer two blockchain for Ethereum, while the POS one is the one that is used as its own layer one blockchain of the Polygon Ecosystem.
Make sure that the blockchain you want to use is right so that you don’t have to do the process all over again.
Input the Amount to Transact
After you have selected the blockchains, the next step is to select the token or coin that you want to use and input the amount you want to transact with.
There are several ERC20 tokens, with the default option being USDT, because most of the transactions occur with USDT.
You can send all of the tokens or coins on your wallet or just some, which you can adjust on the bridge by inputting it manually or selecting the percentage of the amount in your wallet.
Confirm the Transaction
After all the information has been filled, you can confirm your transaction by clicking the confirmation button on the lower side of the DApp.
Another request for confirmation will appear on your wallet through a pop up notification, so make sure to also confirm on there too.
Pay the Fee
The last thing to do is to pay the platform fee for the bridge while also paying for the gas fee of the blockchain you are using.
Don’t worry, the fees can be lower than $1, but it always depends on how crowded the blockchain currently is.
The more crowded the blockchain the higher the fees, so make sure you find a time when most people are not using the bridge like in the evening or night time so that the platform is cheaper.
Conclusion
That is it! You have successfully used the bridge and can now move your crypto around the EVM ecosystem.
By using this, you can now use more DApps that maybe does not exist on Ethereum and exist on Polygon or the other way around so you have more opportunities.
