Announced by the Optimism Collective, the governance and community arm of the network, this allocation will span over multiple rounds, commencing in May and extending throughout 2024. A substantial portion of the 850 million OP, constituting 20% of the initial token supply, will be distributed across these rounds.
Bobby Dresser, Chief Operating Officer of Optimism Foundation, revealed that previous rounds have already seen 40 million OP, equivalent to approximately $158 million, disbursed to deserving recipients. Moving forward, the upcoming rounds will encompass various categories, including retroactive public goods funding (RPGF), infrastructure development, governance initiatives, and developer tooling.
The fourth round, focusing on retro funding, emphasizes community involvement in selecting projects that have demonstrated value to the ecosystem. Subsequent rounds will extend support to on-chain builders and contributors engaged in improving Optimism's infrastructure and governance mechanisms.
Importantly, these grants are not confined to specific regions or entities, with Optimism extending eligibility to anyone striving to enhance the network's capabilities. The final round is slated to conclude in mid-November, marking the culmination of this ambitious grant program.
Optimism's commitment to fostering innovation and inclusivity within the Ethereum ecosystem underscores its dedication to sustainable growth and development. Through these substantial grants, Optimism seeks to empower diverse stakeholders and propel the evolution of decentralized technologies for years to come.
