What are Farcaster and Frames?
Farcaster is a decentralized social media protocol crafted by former Coinbase employees Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan. Emphasizing interoperability, privacy, and user autonomy, it operates on the Optimism network, an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution. This setup allows developers to build various social media dApps easily. Being serverless, Farcaster mitigates data breach risks, ensuring user data ownership and integrity across applications.
Frames introduce a dynamic twist to Farcaster by transforming standard “casts” (cast is equal to tweet on Twitter) into interactive applications. They enable developers to embed complex functions, enhanced UIs, and authenticated actions directly into posts. From instant polls and quizzes, NFT galleries, and live data feeds, to text-based games, Frames expand the capabilities of Farcaster casts significantly.

Frames utilize webpage metadata, allowing Farcaster clients to render embedded interactive features found in linked pages, akin to Open Graph embeds. Frames revolutionize Farcaster by facilitating rich interactions beyond simple text, enabling the construction of sophisticated tools within the social stream. This not only enriches user experience but also fosters ecosystem growth by attracting more developers and users to Farcaster.
Here are the finalists of ETHGlobal’s Farcaster Frames hackathon "Frameworks":
FrameX
FrameX merges the on-chain SPV capability of the StationX Protocol with Farcaster Frames, designed for syndicates, venture DAOs, and asset managers. It enables the creation of on-chain SPVs (stations) on StationX, facilitating capital raising for various objectives like startup investments, DeFi LP additions, NFT collections, or RWAs by issuing LP tokens. FrameX generates customised Frame links for stations to gather rule-based contributions directly from a Frame.
Magic Frames
Magic Frames offers a no-code solution for creating interactive Frames capable of on-chain transactions, all within Farcaster. Users begin by accessing the Magic Frames home frame and using a wizard to select and customize a "Spell" template for various applications, like enabling DAOs to present new proposals for community voting directly within a frame.
CalCast
CalCast introduces a seamless booking solution directly within Farcaster, eliminating the need for external scheduling tools like Calendly. Utilizing Farcaster Frames, CalCast enhances user experience and ensures data ownership, streamlining interactions and privacy in the web3 social media landscape.
Drifting Bottle
Drifting Bottle is a captivating social game within Farcaster that leverages Frames to enhance user engagement through the thrill of discovery and connection. It invites users to cast or uncover anonymous bottles adrift in the digital sea, each carrying a hidden message. The magic unfolds as the secret within is revealed, bridging users with the message's author upon response. This innovative game fosters a vibrant tapestry of social interactions across Farcaster, inviting a wave of creativity and curiosity as users explore the mysteries each bottle holds.
CastSense
CastSense offers Farcaster users tailored analytics to track their engagement and follower behaviour more effectively. It features key metrics such as 30-day changes in casts, mentions, likes, replies, and new followers. Users also gain insights from a weekly follower activity heatmap, identification of active channels, and follower segmentation by tiers, simplifying the analysis of their audience type.
Check-In Caster
Check-In Caster revolutionizes location sharing on Farcaster, blending a "Foursquare-like" experience with the benefit of earning rewards. Users simply check-in by casting on Warpcast with a Google Maps link and @checkin mention. The process rewards users with unique NFT badges and tokens, enhancing exploration with financial incentives.
become{AGI}
become{AGI} is a Frames-driven game emphasizing social interactions within Farcaster, aimed at evolving an AI model into AGI through collaborative knowledge exchange. Players enhance their AI by training it with a Dataset divided into 32-byte grids, each byte containing knowledge of varying rarity. The gameplay involves balancing the acquisition of scarce knowledge against the risk of integrating "Noise" that hinders progress.
Serendipity Engine
Serendipity Engine is a Farcaster frame designed to facilitate user discovery within the network, leveraging the Six Degrees of Separation theory. It suggests potential connections by analyzing profiles, interests, and existing connections, incorporating OpenRank APIs for detailed network insights. This tool streamlines finding and engaging with like-minded individuals on Farcaster.
Payrennial
Payrennial brings Venmo-like payment and request functionalities to Warpcast, allowing users to transact using Ethereum within "payment frames." These frames enable sending payments or requesting money without leaving the app, streamlining the user experience.
FrameHub
FrameHub provides analytics for Farcaster Frames, tracking trends and engagement to inform project decisions. It features a website for real-time Frame trend analysis and a Farcaster account for daily trend updates, supporting users in staying informed on Frame dynamics.
