Setting Records at Sotheby’s
Sharing the highlights on X (formerly Twitter), Bouhanna revealed Sotheby’s remarkable achievements in the digital art realm. Notably, the art brokerage marked a historic milestone, clinching a record-high sale of $6.2 million for Dmitri Cherniak's "Ringers #879 (The Goose).”
The brokerage conducted over 25 auctions, either exclusively dedicated to digital art or incorporating it into contemporary art sales. A significant highlight was their inaugural dedicated live auction, drawing over 300 attendees and raking in a staggering $12 million.
Sotheby’s Dive into Digital Art
Sotheby’s proactive foray into digital art commenced nearly two years ago, with the launch of Sotheby’s Metaverse in October 2021, curating a collection of NFTs for digital collectors.
This move proved pivotal, especially during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, where traditional art venues faced closures. NFTs, on the other hand, emerged as a beacon, allowing art auctioneers to navigate the storm and showcasing artwork to audiences beyond conventional channels.
The blend of digital innovation and traditional artistry at Sotheby’s underscores a thriving synergy, transforming the art landscape and reaffirming the pivotal role of NFTs in amplifying art exposure worldwide.
